Program Note
Francois Sim is a dispassionate divorcee who is unable to forget his ex-wife. One day, he receives an unexpected offer to work as a salesman selling toothbrushes across France. He takes the opportunity and, together with his daughter, revisits places from his past. At first, his car′s navigation system defines the path they take, but when they get lost while driving in the mountains it stops controlling him. The latest from veteran French director Michel Leclerc, this subtle comedy depicts a middle-aged man’s journey after losing his life′s compass and how he finds new hope in life. One of the most interesting aspects of the film is how its narrative overlaps with the true story of amateur British sailor Donald Crowhurst. Veering off course in a round-the-world yacht race, Crowhurst gets lost in the ocean, and Mr. Sim also gets lost. But fortunately helping hands wait for Mr. Sim. A carefully directed film that shines a ray of hope on the over-burdened main character, played by Jean-Pierre Bacri. (RHEE Soue-won)
