Program Note
Experienced and skilled armed robber Yanis is an intelligent and meticulous leader whose identity still eludes the police. Hijacking armored trucks with his team—Frank, Nasser, and Amine—is his specialty. A new member, fresh out of jail explosives expert Eric, is brought in too, as this is no ordinary job. Everything goes according to plan, but Amine’s greed sends them somewhere unexpected. The Crew, director Julien Leclercq′s fourth film of this genre, uses the innate strength of the French gangster film, with traditional crime drama elements woven in—an ex-convict joins a gang after release from jail, an intricately planned heist, brotherhood among gangsters and so on. Set in contemporary outskirts of Paris, Leclercq′s adroit directing keeps the story eye-catching and thrilling throughout. Sami Bouajila, who shared the Best Actor award for Days of Glory at the Cannes Film Festival, and rising French star Guillaume Gouix, turn in exceptional performances in The Crew. (RHEE Soue-won)
