Program Note
At the Auschwitz crematoriums, there was a special group called the Sonderkommando, prisoners force to take care of the bodies. Hungarian Jewish prisoner Saul, a member of the Sonderkommando, finds a boy who he takes to be his son at the crematorium. He then tries to carry out an impossible deed: to give the boy a proper burial. To fulfill this, Saul tries everything, risking his life. Conflicts with other prisoners who attempt a revolt in the camp makes Saul’s desperate struggle even more difficult. The most controversial film at Cannes this year and the feature debut by László Nemes, Son of Saul arouses more debate than any other film. Nemes’ aesthetic persistence—a 4:3 aspect ratio, shot with 35mm film, an anxious first person narrative following Saul from behind using handheld camera and close ups, and the hors champ sound that causes extreme psychological terror—leads us to think deeply about the greatest tragedy that human rationality and civilization ever experienced: the Holocaust. Winner of Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes in 2015. (Jin PARK)
