Program Note
In 1991, Serbian Jelena and Croatian Ivan are lovers who plan to run away to Zagreb together, but an unforeseen event stops them and Ivan is killed. Ten years on, Natasha and her mother return to their village, devastated by the war. And closing herself to the world after losing her brother to the conflict, Ante become irritated by the Croatian man she hires to repair her house. Then, in 2011, university student Luka goes back home after a long absence but his unfulfilled love weighs heavy. Made up of three distinct episodes in which the same actors play different roles in different eras, director Dalibor Metanić’s High Sun explores the suffering, scars and healing from the Yugoslavian War in the late 20th century via three colorful love stories. With hints of a 20th century Romeo and Juliet, these multiple narratives offer themes appealing not just to one region or people, but to all of us. High Sun won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival this year. (Jin Park)
