Program Note
A story about African female genital mutilation(FGM) told from multiple sides. An interview-style documentary, the film contains various opinions from people from all walks of life on the deep-rooted custom. From supporters of FGM, operators, custom-keeping families, critical doctors and politicians, women who suffered side-effects, to opponents, the film captures the status and problems of FGM in closed communities through many voices of different levels. Yet, between the practice’s supporters and opponents, the young girls, the target subjects of FGM, are hardly heard. Their weak, buried voices may reflect the girls’ position. The film approaches the tradition not only from women’s human rights, but also from an African conservative cultural context. How can change and reformation be attempted? The film notices present Africa’s efforts on long-term education, asking us about our position between tradition and reform, and conservatism and progressivism, through the girls and women.
