Program Note
In this cheerful fantasy, a god exists. He lives in Brussels and controls the world via his computer, an eccentric who is tough on humanity and makes them unhappy, just for fun. He is a patriarch, who has a son called JC and a daughter named Ea. He treats his wife badly, puts a curse on his son and is violent toward his daughter. Ten-year-old Ea can take no more: she hacks his computer and goes to Earth to make the world right, using a very special method. Probably best known to Koreans for The Eightieth Day, Jaco Van Dormael’s new film is a comedy with a blend of surprising ideas and a warm view of mankind in which God as a thoroughly unlikable married man, whose wife and daughter attempt to make the world a better place. An innovative, even bold set of scenarios through which the director raises questions on the true value of life, interestingly posed through film. (RHEE Soue-won)
