In 1957, Germany. District Attorney Fritz Bauer receives evidence of the whereabouts of SS-Obersturmbannführer Adolf Eichmann, the man responsible for the mass deportation of Jews. Distrustful of the German justice system, Bauer contacts the Israeli secret service, Mossad, an act which amounts to treason. At the same time, Germany’s intelligence agency, BND, begins investigating Bauer and, using old Danish police reports, threatens to reveal his homosexuality. Jewish-German district attorney Fritz Bauer was an actual person, and the movie begins by showing a black and white photo of him from 1957. While countless films have explored the subjects of Nazism and the Holocaust, Kraume's latest work is unusual in that it reveals how uncooperative the Western world including the German government, the CIA, and Interpol were in apprehending Nazi war criminals. It's also shocking that Germany continued to uphold a similar approach to homosexuality that the Nazi's had. The film's two leads, played by Burghard Kalusner and Ronald Zehrfeld, contribute a great deal to making this cloak-and-dagger story exciting. (RHEE Soue-won)
