Program Note
Jesus does make up for a troupe of drag queen singers in a bar in Havana. He dreams of being a drag queen singer himself one day. He asks his mentor and the bar owner, Mama for the opportunity, but when he finally gets his chance to be on stage, a stranger emerges from the crowd and punches him in the face. The stranger is his father, Angel, a former boxer, who has been absent from his life for 15 years. Furious about his son singing at the bar as a drag queen, Angel forbids Jesus from performing. Jesus unwillingly gives up what he has been dreaming of and has to find other way to make a living for him and his father. A father and son clash over their opposing expectations of each other, Viva becomes a touching love story as the men struggle to understand one another and become family again.
