In Istanbul, a whirlpool of political violence, Kadir gets released on the condition he informs on impure villagers to the authorities. He goes to younger brother Ahmet in a shantytown. Ahmet lives alone after his wife ran away, killing stray dogs, but one day he brings one exceptionally friendly dog home and hides it because it’s against the law. Kadir, keeping an eye on villagers for suspicious ones, smells something suspicious from his younger brother. Frenzy is overwhelming with desperation, starting with uneasy music and mirroring desolate spaces and grim life. The prevailing repressive governmental power, its control and surveillance is excellently expressed through image and sound. Ahmet’s fear, hiding a dog, is remarkably well directed with light-and-dark contrast and sound. Emin Alper, ths winner of Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival with his second feature, is a noteworthy director, and the tragic finale, brought by the frenzy of oppression, is more than imaginably shocking.
