Program Note
Three siblings who discover the identity of their biological father at their mother’s deathbed set off on a quirky journey from Israel through Paris and on to Marseille. The journey is ultimately a return to the past and an exploration of their own selves as well as the ways in which they cope with their mother’s secret.
Directed by veteran Israeli filmmaker Shemi ZARHIN, the film begins with an enigmatic prologue in Algeria in 1963. As the movie progresses, the mystery of the couple shown in the prologue gradually unravels. The three siblings, raised as Jews, each react differently to their “new” identity after confronting the fact that their father might be an Arab. ZARHIN adeptly shows how the Arab-Israeli conflict can influence individuals in their everyday lives and not just at a political or ideological level. In this excellently constructed work, which was invited to the Toronto International Film Festival, one can see and therefore better understand the Arab-Israeli conflict and the dilemma of the global village from a humanistic perspective.
