The camera focuses on three people who spend summer vacation on an island in the Mediterranean: a middle-aged Belgian woman, a naïve young English man and a Spanish driver who is a father. The Belgian woman becomes frustrated that love has ended. The English man deceived his parents tastes the bitterness of life. The Spanish father wants to celebrate his daughter’s birthday, but it is not easy.
The lazy days at the end of summer in Parasol aren’t just vacation. For these characters it’s the time for self-examination and resolution. They struggle to make changes during their vacation in the Mediterranean and their gloomy looks are far from the brightness of summer holiday. What keeps this film from being too heavy is its excellent rhythm. We can have a good look at the lives of three people, while parallels of their lives crescendo. It is impressive the film is documentary-like with non-professional actors. And what stands out is the refined screen composition and dynamics that support the whole film. The use of silence and the encounter of man and woman on the beach near the end of the film recall Mr. Hulot’s Holiday by Jacques Tati. This masterwork comedy is the feature debut film by Belgian newcomer Valery Rosier. (RHEE Soue-won)
