Program Note
Look Love closely follows the lives of two families living in completely different environments in order to show the gap in education and in region, the biggest social issue in present day China. As anthropological research, it observes a father and a son living in a remote village in Hunan and a mother and a daughter living in Beijing. The two kids, Linsheng and Xinyuan who were born in the transition period of a millennium, live under totally different circumstances from each other. Being poor, Linsheng’s father doesn’t feed his children or educate them. Linsheng goes to an elementary school run by a charity but has a hard time adapting. Xinyuan, meanwhile, goes to an expensive private school and is suffocated by her mother’s ambition. Regardless of their economic status, parents from both families struggle to communicate with their children, while the children are unhappy and confused dealing with what they are given. When crisis comes, however, it is the poor family who suffers more. Linsheng shows the face of ultimate poverty when he says, suffering from self-destructive anger and contempt for his father that everyone should die. (CHO Hyeyoung)
