Program Note
Tess is a 1979 romance film directed by Roman Polanski, an adaptation of Thomas Hardy′s 1891 novel Tess of the d′Urbervilles. During the Victorian period, it tells the story of a strong-willed, young peasant girl (played by Nastassja Kinski) who finds out she has title connections by way of her old aristocratic surname and who is raped by her wealthy cousin, whose right to the family title may not be as strong as he claims. Tess was released in theaters in the United States in 1980, and it was a big success in box office grossing more than $20 million in the United States. The film won three Academy Award Oscars out of six Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Tess is one of the most representative films of Roman Polanski as well as of Nastassja Kinski. This Oscar winning romantic epic will be presented to the audience again as a special screening.
