Program Note
As sheep suddenly become infected with a deadly disease, a farm in a secluded valley in Iceland is under threat. Estranged brothers, who haven’t spoken to each other in 40 years, have to work together through this disaster to save their sheep, their most precious possessions; several scenes in Rams suggest the sheep are the brothers′ entire lives. The camera documents their life as single men in the bleak, frozen countryside, solely focused on keeping sheep, constantly subject to bad weather. Although this film deals with the serious issue of losing long-established traditions and heritage in the countryside, it also evokes a smile at times, as there are comic elements in several parts of the film—such as scenes without any dialogue where the sheep dog delivers messages between the feuding brothers, or one of the brothers secretly hiding sheep. After quite some time with minimal speech and extended periods of silence, the ending overflows with deep emotion. Dubbed an “Icelandic comedy,” this film won the Un Certain Regard Prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. (RHEE Soue-won)
