Program Note
Retired celebrated conductor Fred recalls his youth while taking a vacation in the Alps with his old film director friend, Mick. They spend their days quietly watching people when suddenly, some of the British Royal family ask Fred to play his signature piece, “The Simple Song,” at an official event. He declines, despite their insistence that it would really make the show.
Following two men in their 80s, this quirky tale evokes profound introspection concerning life and old age through director Paolo Sorrentino’s peculiar humor. Realized through the frank and honest performances by Harvey Keitel and Michael Caine, the wisdom of old age shines through, offering encouragement to young people who live with their own serious troubles. With these two great and seasoned actors in the lead roles, Youth highlights what shouldn’t be missed in life. At the very end, the beautiful rendition by celebrated Korean soprano Jo Su-mi, completes the sublime beauty embracing this film. (RHEE Soue-won)
