Program Note
Unemployed Thierry Taugourdeau lost his job when his company was restructured. At 51, he has, for the past 20 months, been endlessly searching for new work, but no one seems to want to hire him due to the horrible state of the economy. Eventually, he lands a job as a security guard at a supermarket and uses his earnings to pay back an outstanding bank loan and to care for his handicapped son. However, the nature of his job forces him to confront an ethical dilemma.
The original French title, La Loi du Marché, literally means “the law of the market.” Here, the market is a synonym for capital. Through the character of Thierry, Brizé shows how the law of capital dehumanizes and destroys human dignity. The reality depicted in the film, in which people who confront the enormous power of capital have to abandon their morals to survive and save face, is a situation not too dissimilar from Korea.
Vincent Lindon, who plays Thierry, took home the Best Actor Award at Cannes this year and is a delight to watch in the film. (RHEE Soue-won)
