Program Note
When a friend of theirs passes away, three septuagenarian friends start to worry about their own deaths. In Hinduism, it is very important for the children of the deceased to perform final rites for their parents, but the three men have become worried because all their children live abroad. They look for a mortuary where their remains will be preserved until their children can come for the ritual. They find a mortuary called “Peace Haven” that suits their needs, but its caretakers are particular about clients. The old men decide to build their own “Peace Haven.” Peace Haven is a humorous and poignant road movie that follows three friends as they embark on a journey to look for their final resting place. It is a journey in which, preparing for their own deaths, they look for meaning in their lives by examining their past, present, and future. In a magnificent scene, the camera captures from a distance the old men walking against a backdrop of the beautiful city of Kolkata, their angelic silhouettes crossing over the last hill in their lives.
