While studying photography in Saigon, Vu discovers a new world while hanging out with roommate Thang, who works as a bartender in a club, and the club dancer, Van. From a poor village near the Mekong River, Vu is living in the city with the dedicated help of his father, but is actually spending his days roaming about without a purpose in life. When Thang gets into trouble and needs a place to hide, Vu takes him back to his village and discovers a new desire. Having debuted with the internationally acclaimed Bi, Don’t Be Afraid, the Vietnamese director Phan Dang DI returns with Big Father, Small Father and Other Stories to continue his exploration of the relationship between fathers and sons, casting a microscopic view onto the desires of this new generation.Vietnamese culture has only recently started grappling with issues related to the millennial generation. Phan Dang DI takes their disturbed sexuality, obscured identity, traditional patriarchal values, and their contrasting desires, to recreate them as a silent, yet intensely beautiful image.
