Program Note
An avant-garde reconsideration of the Dracula legend, [The Baron] opens with the arrival an elementary school inspector in a remote village. According to the director, the original film version of [The Baron] was shot by a team of American B-movie filmmakers who defected to Lisbon during World War II. The project was then restored, and in 2005 reshot as a black and white film. Repetitive overlapping, extreme close-ups, and the use of shadows create dreamlike images in a fantastic genre. The transition of shots and the way characters make their entrance demonstrate the experimental feature of this controversial film. This film was shown at Rotterdam. (RHEE, Soue-won)
