Program Note
Sixteenth century Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama opened a new chapter in history when he discovered a sea route between Europe and India. By the same token, the peace of the Kerala tribe was disrupted by the appearance of Western colonizers with guns in Asia. It was a period when people were murdered cruelly and suffered under tyrannical power. Families were shattered and their members enslaved. Krishna, a young Indian man with little knowledge or respect for modern India’s history or cultural heritage, is thrilled to be the recipient of an unexpected inheritance bequeathed by his recently deceased mother. He tries to sell the land to a European mining company at an inflated cost, but a helpful spirit opens his eyes to a sad history of this land. Though Gandhi liberated India politically, is history being repeated in the form of a Western financial re-invasion? The question puts Krishna at the biggest crossroads of his life. While director Santosh Sivan keeps his distance with a typical Bollywood style, he follows a universal subject that inspires patriotism and stimulates fantasy. (PARK Sungho)
