Program Note
Within a monument built at the time “model city economics” had reached a significant turning point, three high school boys that accept being a step behind the times somehow continue to eke a meager existence. Aspiring filmmaker Shimamura shoots 8mm movies. Goichi, the son of a bar owner, seems to have a job waiting for him. And then there is Mr. Iida, their slightly strange older friend whose innocence can be buried by drastic turns on occasion. Entering the lives of the trio is the beautiful Ms. Tominaga. A single action carried out by Shimamura, Goichi, and Iida at her request shakes up the ordered city. The film’s narrative technique doesn’t stop at making the viewing experience an intimate one. The actors’ whispers turn into a rhythmic drama under Morioka Ryu’s naturalistic direction. Ryu’s creative force fluently crosses between commercial and independent films and areas of professional and amateur performance. The film is vivid proof of the director’s contribution to a new style in the tapestry of independent cinema.
