Program Note
Khoa leaves his life in the countryside and heads to Saigon with no without identification and with no solid plans. In the city he finds men earn a living in one of two ways: by collecting scrap metal or prostituting themselves to cool young people against the beautiful nightscape. The city is not the pleasant place for the naive country boy. Though he resents Lam, a man that conned him out of his money, Khoa falls in love with him, a love that is seemingly reciprocated. Khoa cannot accept that his lover is a prostitute, and Lam can’t escape from his ex-boyfriend. Lam also can’t shake his habit of earning money in dangerous ways. Vu Ngoc Dang, a filmmaker popular for his entertaining drama series and films, directs [Lost in Paradise], and so this heavy subject with its fringe group is viewed through a lovely and light gaze. Further still, their unusual lives become understandable and universally recognizable. (PARK Sungho)
