Program Note
Kotoko is a woman who is far from normal. She screams in the streets in the middle of the day, has a habit of stabbing men with a fork, and habitually cuts her wrists with a razor. She sees everyone as two figures within one person: one positive and one negative. Kotoko gives birth to a child and later has a man enter her life offering salvation from her personal hell. A bizarre series of scary and oddly humorous events ensue. This is perhaps typical Tsukamoto Shinya film: hysterical hand-held camera, oblique angles, and extreme close-ups. The film encapsulates a life of fear, sadness, grotesque humor, and plaintive beauty?the two extremities of a life of insanity being poles apart. It attempts to portray Kotoko′s inner madness through extreme violence, both of psychological and visual. It may be torture for the sensitive filmgoer, but a gruesome thrill for B-horror fans. Kotoko could be termed a cult duet: a paring between producer, director, writer, editor, cinematographer, and co-star Tsukamoto and Coco, star as well as composer and production designer.
