Sono Sion is perhaps best remembered as the controversial director of [The Room](1993), but apart from that one film he is still regarded as the pre-eminent director of Japan’s independent film industry of the 1990s. The Room received widespread criticism as the film was the cause of an actual fight in the cinema after its screening at the Berlin International Film Festival. It won the Grand Jury Prize but was considered unsuitable for the Sundance Film Festival Grand Prix. His established style of filmmaking consistently divides opinion and courts controversy, a fine example being [Suicide Club](2001). Still making waves, he has emerged as the Japanese representative director again with the films, [Be Sure to Share] (2009) and [Cold Fish] (2011). [As with Cold Fish], [Guilty of Romance] was also inspired by a true story. The three main actresses seem to compete for the audience′s attention?Sono′s perfectionism showing through here, no doubt, the result of painstaking multiple takes. (Shion YANG)
