A psychological thriller based on a true story, this stunning film unveils the hidden lives of three deranged sisters and one disabled man(a sister’s son), who together play out horrific games of exploitation, abuse, and murder in the spatial confines of their urban apartment. Appearing to be a hardcore version of Chekhov’s play of the same title, this film is a drama of human madness and desire. It creates theatrical yet realistic images with handhelding. As most of the shots are taken inside, it further makes up a texture, like watching a play live. Maciej Kowalewski, the actor-director, gives a delicate touch to female-orientated hysteric desires. The utilisation of unique sound and theatrical lines are some other characteristics to be enjoyed. The affection and hatred the sisters feel for one another at the same time leads to an in-depth insight into the female. (LEE Sang-yong)
