Frederic is a French artist living in Rome with his wife Angele, an actress. Paul, an extra, comes to Rome to play a role in a film about Resistance and he and his wife Elizabeth stay in Frederic’s apartment. As Paul and Frederic become friends, the couples’ conflict and agony rise to the surface. The latest film directed by a world-renowned master Philippe Garrel shows a combination of the delicate sentiments of France and Italy. This “film about film” which was shot in Rome and Paris reminds us of Contempt directed by Godard, given its background and the couples’ tension and conflicts. Unlike Garrel’s previous works, this film announces a catastrophe at its very beginning. However, it is clear that the film’s sorrowful characters agonizing over love are the ones created by Garrel. Louis Garrel, the director’s son and persona, plays the role of the wandering man and Monica Bellucci is cast as the seductive actress.
