Daniel Barry, a parish priest of Borrisokane in Tipperary, considers himself to be a wrong person in a wrong place at the wrong time. He works hard to fulfill his duties but he doesn’t share anything with the parish residents and he is secretly afraid of losing his sense of mission. As the bishop forces him to collect money to expand the church, Barry opens the Stella Cinema so that his enthusiasm for cinema and his duties for the church may not contradict each other. A small cinema in an Irish rural village serves as a background for the dramatic conflict between faith and enthusiasm, Rome and Hollywood as well as a man and his conscience. Barry faces the opposition from many influential parish residents who consider him and the bishop the origin of moral decadence. Ultimately, Barry has to face the opposition from his own conscience. This work deals with the conflict between love and duties, hope and trust as well as enthusiasm for the unknown and stability ensured by familiar things. It reflects the dilemma of Ireland in the mid-1950s which, although modern was still dominated by the traditions of the church. (Jay JEON)
