Cesar, an old bachelor, works as a doorman in a wealthy neighborhood and lives with his ailing mother. He becomes revengeful as he despises the rich residents living in the building. Meanwhile, he pays close attention to one of them, Clara, a beautiful and cheery woman. After finding out that she has a boyfriend, Cesar plans to wipe the smile off her face. Every night, Clara has to undergo unimaginable horrors. This is the latest film directed by Jaume Balaguero, a world-renowned genre director discovered at Sitges Film Festival. With brilliant and violent imagination, the director depicts a monstrous man who can only be happy when others are unhappy. Since the story is about the loneliness felt by those who are excluded in today’s society, it implies that the ‘monster’ is created by society itself. Genre films traditionally deal with such consciousness of social classes as well as criticism against society. The film doesn’t seem to be very violent at first glance but it is actually extremely violent when you reflect on it. This excellent genre film represents this year’s Sitges Film Festival.
