The story unfolds around the seven acts in the Gospel according to Matthew. Luminita, an illegal immigrant living in a shantytown, hatches a plan to get herself out of her predicament: She bumps into Antonio, a mysterious old man. The unavoisable and harsh encounter between the two leads to unforeseeable consequences. This film, which was introduced during the competition at this year’s Locarno International Film Festival, is the debut feature directed by amazing new talents who were inspired by real people living in Torino, their hometown. Acute criticism of the dark side of society is depicted on the basis of an extremely strict form. The two characters seem to belong neither to good nor to evil but their struggle for survival leads to the true empathy between the two at the end. The human body serves as an essential element of this film; the body is at the center of any action and at the same time, it functions as a catalyst for actions. It is also the body that allows the two protagonists to enjoy transcendental mercy and to experience an awakening. (RHEE, Soue-won)
