Program Note
Following the end of World War II, Polish people in Prussia find themselves subjected to a series of changes of power. The horrors that Poland had to experience during the war as a small nation are symbolically demonstrated through Rose, who, after losing her husband during the war and surviving rape and abuse at the hands of German soldiers, is living with her daughter at a farm in the countryside. Thaddeus visits her to inform of her husband’s death, and feels sympathy for Rose who was suffering from physical and mental devastation. However, the reality they face is a brutal one: Time passes by and seasons change even in their ruined lives, and change is slowly brought about. The director realistically shows oppression and violence without reserve. Some scenes may make viewers cover their eyes. A woman riding a bicycle along a peaceful country road, women bargaining at a small market, and girls who cheerfully chatting outside are suddenly and mercilessly victimized by an assault and decimation. Rose is a film that strongly conveys antiwar messages without any explicit sloganeering. (Karen PARK)
