Program Note
Porfirio makes a living by lending his cell phone in a remote city in the vicinity of the Columbian Amazon. He is paralyzed from the waist down and can’t perform even daily tasks without the help of his son. Wearing diapers, he feels that his bed is a universe away from his wheelchair, but dreams of a day when he can fly. This is an intense film, bereft of any pity toward the handicapped, and is based on a true story that caused an uproar during the Columbian Civil War. The camera is placed directly in front of the wheelchair at eye level throughout the movie. It shows us the perspective of the character as he interacts with the world around him, helping us to see how different his life is from the outwardly peaceful one. The last scene, in which he criticizes his country through a song is quite impressive. The lead is played by the real Porfirio, whose perspective on the world outside reflects his soul and provides insight. This is a magnificent movie that proves the potential of the Columbian film industry which has gained momentum in the past few years. (RHEE, Soue-won)
