Program Note
One master meets another as Wenders, one of the world’s most critically acclaimed directors details the life of one of the greatest ballet choreographers of our time, Pina Bausch (1940~2009). Wenders, a long-time devotee of Bausch’s works, decided to make this film in 3D so as to imbue the stage performances choreographed by Bausch with the same kind of immediacy they would have in live perforamnce. The development of motion picture technology in fact has enabled the director to decorate ballet with cubic effect, helping him remove his considerable worry. It is said that Wenders met Bausch for the first time after a viewing of [Cafe Muller] in 1985. Building up their friendship since then, they once planned to shoot a film together. PINA has in the end become Wenders’ sensuous and visual homage to Bausch. Set in a city where Bausch used to live, the legendary Pina Bausch Ballet Company’s colourful and energetic performances stretch out on the silver screen. (RHEE, Soue-won)
