Program Note
Fred Daly leads a quiet and lonely life in his car, giving up on all hope of improving his conditions. However, when Cathal, a young man with a positive attitude, becomes his neighbor, everything changes. Sharing sadness and happiness together, the two men find the joy of simple and free life. Cathal is determined to help Fred reorganize his life. Fred remodels his car and tries to benefit from social welfare. He also wants to be close to Jules, an attractive music teacher who lives alone nearby. However, Fred is reluctant to tell Jules where he lives while Cathal’s life is threatened by drug addiction. The three foreigners become closer to each other, influence each other’s life and change each other, making this film an ode to friendship, hope and unending efforts. In this first feature directed by Darragh Byrne, a documentary director, the description of life on the street free from cliches greatly harmonizes with a sense of humor. Without the outstanding performance of Colm Meaney cast as Fred who never loses his humanity and humor in any difficult situations, this film would have been less attractive. (Jay JEON)
