The relationship between Hanah and Violetta is peculiarly obscure. For not only is it between a mother of marked individuality and a daughter with affection deficiency but between a fantasy loving photographer and a half-hearted model. Hanah asks Violetta to be a photo model, which causes Violetta to drift apart from her loving grandmother. Isabelle Huppert’s impassioned performance stands out in this startlingly innovative debut by Eva Ionesco, who is also an actress herself. Inspired by her childhood, Ionesco seamlessly inserts autobiographical reflections in her film. Constructing an intense visual world by the predominant use of pure primary colours is linked to photography, the film’s main theme. The film portrays a mother exploiting her daughter to achieve a successful career as she takes pornographic photos of her under-aged daughter and sells them. Yet, the ethical judgement is left to those viewing the film. The director says that she has mapped it out to make it sound like a dreamy fairy tale, and further wanted to show the heroines’ journey through which they overcome their obstacles and gain a triumphant victory.
