Program Note
In Switzerland during the Cold War a compromising photograph exposes star reporter Icelin as a Soviet spy, and special agent Rappold is given the case. Unable to withstand the pressure, Icelin commits suicide in the interrogation room, and doubt over the genuineness of the photograph is raised. The absorbing plot and the impassioned performance by top actors give radiance to this spy thriller. World star Klaus Maria Brandauer plays the leading role. The movie is set during 1956, when the Swiss army threatens to communism in order to secure nuclear weapons. Though the plot dealing with spies during the Cold War seems somewhat banal, the movie loses not a bit of attractionas a result of the solid scenario and the impassioned performance by the actors. Brandauer, well known to us from his roles in [Mephisto], [Oberst Redl], and [Rembrandt], gives a masterful performance. As a result of tenacious investigation to find the truth, it is concluded that truth can be manipulated, and this sends the message of bitter criticism toward Switzerland of that day.
