Program Note
When his mother passes away, Lucky swears to find success. He visits his uncle in the city in order to attend school, but his uncle abandons him. Then an old Indian lady takes him in and they start to live together. Though they do not understand each other’s language, a friendship grows between them. [Lucky] touches the two of the most deep rooted problems of South Africa: Neglected children wondering on streets after losing their parents to AIDS and racial conflict between Indian and African since the end of Apartheid. Luthra criticizes the irresponsible adults by making the ten year-old boy look for his lost father. Yet she discusses the possibility of communication through the boy’s friendship with an old Indian lady who hates Africans. The film was made on a shoestring budget and shot in twenty-six days using open script and handheld camera, was intended for realism of the story. Music played purely with African instruments is also an attractive feature of the film. (RHEE, Soue-won)
