Program Note
Bastoy Prison for minors houses prisoners of diverse backgrounds. They receive neither education nor correction, but instead, are used to support cheap labor in the worst conditions. In order to survive the inhumane treatment, they plan an escape. This is an outstanding showpiece based on the true events that occurred in Norway, 1915. It opens above breaking sea waves, and a narration about a whale that survived an entire day after being pierced by three harpoons. As the movie progresses, we learn that this story was made up by a sailor boy while he was incarcerated. The prison is a vessel holding the boys under the same fate, and the whale their savagery. The end of the movie leaves the main character untamed and the audience in awe. The quality of the filming is top notch and certain confrontation scenes are even reminiscent of the Eisenstein’s [Alexander Nevsky]. (RHEE, Soue-won)
