Program Note
Cyril, an eleven-year-old boy, has been left in a children’s home because his father has no money. Denying that his father has abandoned him, Cyril sets out to come find his parent, only to discover that his father has even sold a bicycle he gave to him. Cyril then meets Samantha, a hairdresser, and a new relationship begins to blossom. The latest work directed by the Dardenne brothers, masters of Belgian cinema, impresses the audience with the directors’ amazing direction and the actors’ excellent performance. The masters have the great power to express a boy’s inner world and behavior through the actor. The film first uses hand-held camera shots to convey the anxiety and confusion felt by a child who is hastily abandoned. The character’s emotions then explode very intensely. The second half of the film, filled with a seemingly endless bicycle-riding scene, expresses the crisis of the boy who is about to be abandoned again. The ambiguous but shocking ending implies that the boy’s broken heart will never be healed. (RHEE, Soue-won)
