Program Note
Camille and Sullivan are a young couple. Feeling stifled in the relationship, Sullivan leaves to travel through South America and his contact with Camille stops with time. Camille is left frustrated, but her encounter with a middle-aged German while she studies architecture leads her to fall in love again. This lyrical feature is the French author/director Mia Hansen-Løve’s third feature. Starting in 1999, the film moves by four years to 2003 and to 2007 and follows the changes in Camille’s inner and outer worlds. Moving from the lush green landscapes of youth into the more mature settings of adult love, the film illustrates the different ways that we experience emotion. The final images show that although our first loves stay with us throughout our lives, eventually we can break away from them and move forward. (RHEE, Soue-won)
