On Monday morning, Paul Wertret, a bank executive in his fifties, goes to work at eight o’clock promptly, as usual. He enters a meeting room, takes out a gun and kills two of his bosses. As he waits for the police to arrive, he looks back at the events that led him here. This excellent film acutely criticizes capitalist society. With a well-organized plot and excellent direction skills, the director tells a story of a middle-aged man whose lifetime career is about to go nowhere. At first glance, the main character seems to be a victim of the capitalist system but in reality, he has faithfully obeyed the system. During a psychological counseling session, he reflects on his raison d’etre and his past life. The constrast between his past days of happiness shared with his wife and his present moment implies that he hasn’t lived in the way he wants. At the Busan International Film Festival, meet this great film directed by the veteran French director Jean-Marc Moutout who raises the question of freedom, choice and responsibility for today’s citizens of capitalist society.
