Program Note
Romeo and Juliette fall in love at first sight at a party. Their romance leads to marriage and a short-lived happiness. When they find their baby has a brain tumor, they declare war. The journey afterwards is their ceaseless effort to save their son, while they learn what it means to be grown-ups. There seems to be nothing new about a story of parents who try to save their sick child. Moreover, most of the films dealing with this theme are dark and serious. However, Valerie Donzelli knows how to interpret this ordinary theme in a completely new way. The film’s variety of narrators and rhythmic pace strongly support the story, which could otherwise lapse into maudlin cliche. A strong will to survive keeps the film afloat in even its most trying moments. The director says that she wanted to depict young people who become responsible grownups by entering an unexpected world when they are not ready to face a war. (RHEE, Soue-won)
