Program Note
A famous violinist Nasser Ali cannot find a good enough violin to replace the cherished instrument that he has lost. When he finds a perfect violin and plays it, he is so moved, that he decides to die. While he contemplates the means by which to achieve his goal, his painful secret and the reason for his decision reveal themselves. Arabian Night-ish fantastic visual style and animation technique is impressive. Marjane Satrapi who screened her animation Persepolis at Cannes, comes back with a unique imagination that transcends time and space to lead audience to the world of magic and fantasy. The protagonist travels back in time introspecting his childhood with his family one day at a time till the last day like a fairytale. The fact that a Christian angel Gabriel turns into Asrael and the protagonist’ past love’s name is Irane is a reference and nostalgia to the director’s culture. The scene in which his memory of Irane is visually expressed without words through the poetic sound of violin stirs a profound emotional reaction. (RHEE, Soue-won)
