[Best Intentions] is the latest offering from director Adrian Sitaru, an emerging star in Romanian new wave who is perhaps best known for his work, [Hooked]. Alex panics at a phone call notifying that his mother was hospitalized for a stroke. The doctor tries to calm him saying that the damage is not as serious as Alex fears, and his girlfriend is busy nagging that he is overreacting. However, various experiences that his friends tell him make him nervous. Even indifferent advice that patients and their families in the same hospital room give makes him more sensitive and uneasy. His mother gets better as time passes, while her son becomes more and more nervous. Unlike the previous piece that has only point of view shots, this one repeatedly shows the third person point of view and the subjective point of view as if each character is looking at Alex through a camera lens. However, point of view shots become more frequent towards the end, effectively describing that Alex is the only one who is being unreasonably nervous. The director’s smooth direction and actors’ fine performances are definitely worthy of notice. (Karen PARK)
