Program Note
1982, during political unrest in Peru, Caetana is an upper class member, living in her stepfather’s vast mansion with servants. She is used to being alone, and uses her imagination to hold conversations with dead Peruvian heroes who were killed during colonization. When her mother becomes pregnant, she believes that she must die if she has a younger brother. This is a debut feature notable for its unique way of looking the Peruvian colonization history and modern society from the perspective of a young girl. Though political unrest permeates through the movie, it is not obvious ? it is rather expressed indirectly though background elements such as bomb threats and wall graffiti. The main character’s morbid imagination and actions, relatives’ illness, and terrorist threats add to the strange air of the movie. This dreamlike quality of the movie is what makes this film outstanding, rather than the narrative itself. The emergence of a new director worthy of notice was announced in this year’s Berlin Film Festival. (RHEE, Soue-won)
