A nurse, a gymnast, and her coach organize a group called ‘ALPS’. Its members are hired by friends and family members of deceased people to serve as stand-ins for their dead daughter, wife and girlfriend. The nurse who plays the role of a tennis player who died from a car accident meets new parents and she thinks about her father from whom she has become distant. This is the latest film directed by the Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos who was spotlighted for [Dogtooth](2009), which won the Prix Un Certain Regard at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Along with its distinct theme of ‘individuals’ loneliness and desires in modern society’, this great film also questions if a loved one can be replaced with someone else. The name of the group is the ALPS because the Alps can’t be replaced with any mountain range. Meanwhile, its members try to replace others, as it they were the dead ones. However, the nurse’s attitude questions this possibility of replacement. In this film, too, Yorgos Lanthimos, who represents Greece’s new generation, proves his ability to interpret an extraordinary topic with his brilliant imagination. (RHEE, Soue-won)
