A young lawyer campaigning for human rights has her license suspended while her reporter husband is terminated from his newspaper for his coverage of antigovernment activities. He now lives in exile and she lives by herself, lonely, and with deteriorating health due to a difficult pregnancy. She wants to move out of the country and start a new life with her child. Her application for an exit visa from Iran proves complicated because of her criminal record and her day-to-day life is equally hard. Director Mohammad Rasoulof, who also produced this movie, was incarcerated along with the fellow director Jafar Panahi, and banned from making further films for the next 20 years in 2010. At present, he is free as a result of petitions from many filmmakers from around the world, but he is still prohibited from leaving the country. [Goodbye] is based on the director’s personal experiences, and is a delicate and detached portrayal of personal pain and despair that comes with living and working under a suppressive and oppressive Iranian government.
