Program Note
To 11 year old Jonathan, his little sister Sophie’s mere existence is a nuisance; she is someone who only gets in the way of his time alone with his grandfather during vacation. When Sophie is kidnapped by a bear that lives in a nearby forest his dream sort of comes true. But as Jonathan leaves on an adventure into the center of the enchanted forest to rescue her, a dangerous voyage begins to unfold. [The Great Bear] is an animation with a green message about the preciousness of nature wrapped inside some beautiful pictures. The elements of time and place?summer vacation and a fantastical entry into the forest?blend together to create an absorbing adventure story. This pleasant movie is recommended to all viewers as a deep tale that reflects upon the forest as a place of healing, and on the symbiotic relationship between man and animal. (RHEE, Soue-won)
