Program Note
[Yulu] is a collection of 12 short documentaries about 12 Chinese leaders who stand out in their various fields. Six emerging directors who previously only made one or two feature films were given the opportunity by executive producer Jia Zhangke. [Yulu] looks like a film exploring 12 different occupations on the surface, but in fact the 12 people who film showcases, are real adventurers who throw themselves into challenges to look for jobs with a new set of values. In his previous films, Jia tended to focus on frustrated and defensive people in the rapidly changing modern Chinese society. Now his interest shifts to vigorous individuals who create new values that lead to new and diverse life patterns in this drastically changing era. The prominent visuals and the sound design come courtesy of Jia’s team: cinematographer Yu Lik Wai, sound designer, Zhang Yang, and music director, Lim Giong. Other visual elements are created by lighting designer Wong Chi Ming, a frequent collaborator of director Wong Kar Wai. (PARK Jin-hee)
