Director Jafar Panahi is under house arrest after being sentenced to 6 years for anti-government activities and has been banned from filmmaking for 20 years. During a fireworks display in Tehran, Panahi’s friend, director Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, visits him and documents his day, creating a dual point of view by including Panahi’s own camera phone footage in the final product. Panahi’s day is a busy one. He takes calls from his colleagues asking about how he’s doing and welcomes a casual visitor. Then he tells his camera-toting friend about the sequence in a new film he’s working on in detail. His day unfolds without a break of any kind but he is constantly tormented by the despair he feels because he cannot truly accomplish anything significant. The camera captures the frustration of an artist unable to create art and his concern for a contemporary Iranian cinema that is oppressed of its freedom of expression. For one who is forbidden to make any films, this is not a film. (CHO Young-jung)
