Program Note
Produced with the support of Al Jazeera, [No More Fear] follows the Tunisian Revolution in real time, an event that heralded the beginning of this year’s‘ Arabian Revolution’. The revolution began when one citizen set himself on fire on the streets, causing other citizens to raise their voices against the government. Amateur filmmakers captured the struggle of the Tunisian people, who rang the last chiming bells of the 24-year-long dictatorship of President Ben Ali and brought a new era to spring in the Arab world. Also included in the film are the testimonies of those who were tortured under the Ben Ali regime. Though somewhat rough, the movie’s merit lies in simply having recorded important scenes of history in the making in difficult surroundings. The film was part of a special showcase at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and will be remembered for capturing the moment when Tunisian citizens cried out in unison against the government that had oppressed them, for decades, in despair and silence.
